I damage my rotator cup tendon last summer in a mtn bike crash Sad It has started to bother me again. I already seeing someone for treatment. My question are: if I have to have it operated on a) what the recovery time before starting PT, b) when can I expect to be able to get on a trainer, c) when can I expect to start road riding and d) when can I expect to get on a mtn bike?

thanks
Geoffrey

Geoffrey:

These are questions that you should fire at your orthopedic doctor, which, I am sure you will do. Roughly, you should plan on a recovery time of 2-3 months. Your doctor will start you on physical therapy early in the recovery phase to help mobilize the shoulder.

You could literally be on a trainer the day after surgery, provided you chose the right trainer, a recumbent trainer. There is not load placed on your shoulder with a recumbent trainer. You could also be road riding sooner on a recumbent bike, but get the clearance from your doctor before you jump on one. The tough question of when to get back on the trails I will dodged and leave that one answered by your orthopedic doctor.

Thanks,

FWIW, after I disolocated my shoulder, I was "allowed" to ride one of those sit down bikes at the gym the next day while my arm was in a sling.
Not the same as really riding, but it's something...and it has kept me in shape.
