I have read up on my symptoms, and have come to the conclusion i have some ulnar nerve compression going on. Unfortuantely I do 3 things that it seems could be causing my problem. I work at a desk 10 hours a day typing, and rest my left elbow on the desk when doing so. I sleep with my arms bent at the elbow with hands under my pillow. And in addition to mountain biking I have taken up road biking. A few weeks before i started the road riding I was getting a weird pain in my shoulder followed by tingling of the entire arm. I am no longer experiencing the shoulder pain, but the finger tingling is happens almost everyday for a few minutes at a time, and if I lay on my left side with my hands under my head i get the tingling within 5 minutes. I recently took a 10 day mountain biking trip and was symptom free the entire time. When i got back to work it started all over again. I have been wadding a shirt up for my arm to rest on, and it seems to help a little. I plan to see a neurologist soon. Any suggestions. Oh I would also like to add the tingling has never happened while on my road bike, or directly after riding. It is always when trying to sleep or at work.

shikee:

Your symptoms sound consistent with ulnar nerve compression. Based on what you are describing it sounds most consistent witht the compression occurring at the level of the elbow. If were at the level of the hand it would be worsened by your bicycling both mountain and road. You are taking appropriate measures with protecting the elbow, you may even want to try positioning your key board so that the elbows are slightly off the edge of the desk with some padding placed where your arms rest on the desk. Do try to adjust your sleeping position to avoid over flexing your elbows when you go to sleep, possibly using one of the pillows with a build in neck support. Also, seriously look at giving up sleep at work Wink Oh wait a minute you said it "It is always when trying to sleep or at work." not "when trying to sleep at work"

Occasionally arthritic changes to the elbow predisposes someone to ulnar nerve compression. Trauma to the involved elbow can be a predisposing factor as well. You may need to see a orthopedic surgeion in your quest for relief if you have significant scar tissue in the area where the nerve compression is occuring, a surgical procedure to release the scar tissue may be appropriate.

Thanks,

Thanks for the quick reply. I have been trying to adjust my sleeping position, and keep my left arm straight out beside on top of some stacked pillows (I usually sleep on my right side, but have no problems with my right arm). I'll get in touch with my local Physician and see what he wants to do. I recently had blood work and Xrays that all came back normal.
Thanks again,
Brian
