Doc,
For as long as I can remember I've been a mouth breather when I sleep and when I'm working at an elevated HR because when I lay down or exert myself, my nose gets a bit stuffy. It doesn't completely clog, just enough so that I can't breath freely.
I've tried Claritin to no avail and recent tried Breath-Right strips which only helped loosen the snot enough to run down my face. Any ideas on what else I might try?
Am I doomed to mouth breathing in these situations?
Thanks! |

There is no reason why you should not breathe through your mouth when excercising..most everyone does so. |

Visit with your physician. There are several things that come to mind with chronic nasal congestion. First off is allergic rhinitis (hay fever). The nasal allergies do not have to be to hay or grass but can be due any of a number of allergens including dust mites, molds and pollens to name just a few. Deviated nasal septum either from a defect present at birth (congenital) or from trauma (broaken nose). Chronic reflux can also be a cause of nasal congestion. Your doctor should review your history, examen your nose and throat carefully and then make some decisions on which way to go for the best treatment for you.
Mouth breathing is a given with rigorous exercise but you should still not resign your self to having to mouth breath all the time. Your physician should be able to help or refer you to an ENT who may be able to help.

I had the trauma nose thing, and had surgery last year to fix the deviated septum. Can breathe though my nose now! _________________ Winkelmann Training Fundamentals-

Went to the doctor today and got some samples of Nasonex. If that doesn't help, I'm going back in two weeks for a CT Scan. Thanks Doc, Wink, and Guy! |

Now that someone brought it up, it reminds me.....
I've had nasal issues on my left side nostril for a while. Bleeding is common and very difficult to stop. Breathing through the left side seems to get worse year by year. Nasal strips work great, but won't stay on during heavy sweating even with clean dry skin to start with. Other forms of inhalants don't work for me either. This includes over the counter and prescribed stuff.
I don't have any unusual allergy issues other than the yearly spring and winter allergy attacks.
I broke the nose many years ago and the nose never set perfectly, now leans to my right. I assume this contributes to my problem.
With a company merge, I am waiting to see if we're switching health providers. Once that's settled, I am off to see an ENT and also get a 2nd oppinion prior to any surgery if required. Thanks to Nathan's testimony, I'll make that 2nd opinion mandatory.
