Took a spill last Sunday and broke two ribs when I landed in some rocks. Per the xrays, one rib did not separate but one is broken clean through. The guys on OLN ride bulls all the time with broken ribs, but I still can't blow my nose. Any experience with a similar injury or thoughts about how long I should plan on being off the bike. Thanks.

To ride bulls quires lack of common sense and no pain receptors.

To ride bikes requires common sense and perception of what your pain recptors are telling you. It takes 6-8 weeks for the ribs to heal. Plan on going easy for that amount of time. Strapping, tapping, binders do not speed healing but increase the likelyhood of a pneumonia from developing. The key to keep the lungs from getting pneumonia is regular deep breathing and coughing while holding a pillow to your ribs that are broken. Pain medications during the first 1-2 weeks when the ribs are most sore is beneficial in helping you deep breath. Talk with your doctor.

Thanks,

If I get to a point where I can tolerate riding on a trainer or the road, is it ok to ride through some pain or would that do more harm than good?

Do get on the trainer and exercise to your tolerance of discomfort. The prblem with going out on the road is if you take a spill before those ribs are fully healed, they can be refractured easily.

Thanks,
