There was a day a few months ago when I sat on my saddle with out wearing my bike shorts, riding my beater to the store. Felt a sharp pain on the upper left inner thigh. Kept me off the bike for a while when I tried to get back on, I felt the pain again. I tried raising the saddle it did lessen the pain, but did not abate it. What should I do.

You may have unduly compressed the nerves in the back side with the ride in unpadded shorts. Lay off the bike for a week or two. Put you padded shorts back on and look at putting the same saddle that you ride on your high end bike on your beater bike to keep your back side content. Have your seat height checked so it is not too high, which can cause undue pressure on the buttocks and the nerve exiting down the back of the thigh bone, the sciatic nerve. If the seat nose is tilted up too high it can compress the peroneal nerve and cause pain in another delicate part of your anatomy. I like to set the seat horizontal or with just a slight degree of nose downward tilt of about 1-2 degrees.

Thanks,
