Doc,

About three weeks ago I took a tumble and banged the base of my thumb right above my wrist in the thick padded part of the palm. It immediately swelled and was very painful. The next morning after ice and ibuprofen the swelling and pain had gone down considerably and a deep purple and pink bruise began to appear which lasted for a week or so. Two weeks after the fall only a light dull pain existed when squeezed. So I thought everything was fine. It was healing on track.

Then I took a small fall, didn't go all the way to the ground, but used that hand (in the same spot) to stop myself from hitting the ground. It started throbbing immediately, but quickly stopped hurting. Since this was during the STORM race I did not stop to look. By the end of the race the base of the hand was deep purple.

Now when riding the tip of my index finger is going numb. The first time it went numb it lasted 4-5 hours. I thought no big deal. As I type, its been well over 24 hours since my last ride and the tip of the finger is still quite numb and my palm is still painfully when touched.

Should I see a doctor or can I wait and see?

Thanks for your time,

John

John:

It would be worth a trip to the doctor and have hand and wrist x-rays, including navicular views, taken to look for subtle fractures. You likely have injured the nerve going to the your finger tip from the fall and possible fracure or swelling compressing the nerve and may warrant an evaluation by an orthopedic doctor to have it looked at. IF you have fractured the navicular bone which is one of the wrist bones that sits at the base of the thumb, you only have one good shot at getting it to heal without surgical intervention so you will want a thorough evaluation of the hand by a qualified physician.

Thanks,
