Doc,

I noticed that my blood pressure has spiked up in the last 6 month's. I normally run about 110/65 but, recently it's been reading in the mid 120's over 70ish. I checked it on several occasions to see if maybe it was a fluke but it stayed fairly consistent in the 120's. I can't figure out why the change all of the sudden. The only thing I'm doing differently than what I was in the past is that I'm consuming about 50-60 grams of Whey Protein per day in the form of a shake.

Is there any correlation between Whey protein consumtion and elevated blood pressure?

Thanks Doc.

MOJO:

Much to the chagrin of the suppliment industries, it is highly unlikely you need or will benefit from a protein suppliment. Your body can only use a certain amount of protein a day, the rest becomes waste product or is stored as FAT or Glycogen, by the body breaking down the protein and converting it to a storable form of fatty acids or glucose. Even training athletes only require 0.6 - 0.8 gm of protein/kg of body wt (2.2 with pounds). Most diets have well over 1 gram/kg ratios. The waste products of protein breakdown include blood urea nitrogen BUN and creatinine (not to be confused with creatine). BUN and creatinine have to be cleared through the kidney. Individuals on traditional high potein western diets (USA included) have elevated levels of BUN and Creatinine and higher blood pressures than individual who have lower protein diets that eat less animal base protein. Now, did the ingestion of this whey suppliment cause your increase of baseline blood pressure? That I cannot honestly tell you. Nutritional suppliment can be contaminated with other products that could certainly increase your blood pressure. It has been found in studies of nutritioinal suppliments that up 30% of them may have contaminants, some of the items found include anabolic steroids and ephedrine which can raise your blood pressure.

What should you do? Save your money, eat a well ballanced diet that is not too heavily weighted with animal protein, and skip the suppliments. If your BP keeps trending upward, see a doctor for an evaluation to see if something else is going on that could be making your blood pressure creep up.

Thanks,
