I got a new bike. I have ridden it enough now and have been really comfortable on the bike. The only issue is when I stop riding, my right knee cap at the top hurts a little. Not sever or burning, just a little pain for about 15 minutes then it quits. No pain while riding and no additional pain caused when moving afterward.
Could this be a saddle position issue, ie knee to far over foot, or just me getting used to the new bike? I have been riding bikes for many, many years and have not had this issue before.
Thanks. |

Houston Kid:
My apologies for the delay. I have been on call and buried in hospital work for the last two weeks.
Knee pain is a recurring topic on the forum. I have posted the guidance I use on knee pain evaluation including all areas so if someone sees your heading and wants to know what to look for in working out the source of knee pain.
Knee Pain Location as Indication of Fit Problems:
Location- Front of Knee
Causes -- Correction:
Seat too low -- Raise Seat
Seat too Forward -- Move Seat Back
Excess climbing -- Reduce climbing or
Big gear mashing -- Spin at Higher RPM in lower gear
Cranks too long -- Shorter Cranks
Location- Inside of Knee
Causes -- Correction:
Cleat malposition toes point out --Adjust cleats to bring toes in or use floating pedals/cleats
Excess pedal float -- Limit float to 5 degrees
Excess exit tension to release -- Lower tension
Feet too far apart -- Move cleats out (moves shoes out on pedals), narrower bottom bracket or cranks with narrower Q factor
Location- Outside of Knee
Cause -- Correction:
Cleat malposition toes point in -- Adjust cleats to bring toes out use floating pedals/cleats
Excess pedal float -- Limit float to 5 degrees
Feet too close -- Move cleats in (moves shoes in on pedals), wider bottom bracket or cranks with wider Q factor
Location- Back of Knee
Cause -- Correction:
Saddle too high -- Lower saddle
Saddle too rearward -- Move saddle forward
Floating pedals with too much float -- Limit float to 5 degrees
