I have a question, not sure if there is any easy answer. I am taking several medications for asthma. I have never had an asthma attack while cycling, partly because I sometimes just have to stay home when it flares up, but also pace myself while riding. However, I would love to try my hand at racing sometime. Double Lake would have been a good time to try, but I had already committed myself to volunteering with GHORBA for that weekend. My current med routine is as follows:
Advair - 500/50 - BID
Flonase - 2 in eash nostril QAM
Allegra - 1 po BID
albuterol - PRN
I also take a ton of vitamin C and the like, plus I have a HEPA filter in my apartment. I used to take ephedrine HCL tablets on occasion, but they spiked my blood pressure. I used to take Singulair as well but stopped that. Any magic wand you can wave, or any cycling training suggestions? Thanks in advance bud! |

cowboyathlete:
GO RACE! If your asthma is in good control there is no reason for you not to race. Your are wise not to race when you are having a flare. If you are having flares, you should see a Pulmnologist (Lung Specialist) who will evaluate you for reasons that you are flaring despite being on good medications. Once the cause is sorted out and you can gain full control of your asthma, you should be able to go full-bore-on racing. Do stay away from ephedrine, as you have discovered it elevates blood pressure and can have very serious and even life threatening side effects. It is a banned substance by the World Anti Doping Association (WADA) which UCI, USA Cycling, NCAA and the International Olympic Committee all adhere too.

Thanks, | I will ask my PCP for a referall. Part of it has to do with living in southeast Texas. I never have problems when I ride at Warda, for example. |
