After racing the Tapatio course this past weekend my throat felt like it was totally on fire - this is rare for me, happened one other time but I cannot remember what course or time of year. Other folks seemed to complain about it too and I am guessing it is from some allergy. I can still feel it today (Monday). Can you recommend an over the counter medication that will not affect race performance for the problem?

My sinuses were burning so bad that my teeth hurt. I assumed it was the cedar.

Yep, I think I remember that I was allergic to cedar, some time ago, back in college, but I never take any medication so I dunno what to do about it.

yetiquacker: (There must be a good story behind your handle.)

Over the counter allergy medications that are not likely to affect your performance include loratidine (Claritin, Tavist Non-Sedating brand names) however, claritin is one of the least potent antihistamines and clemastine (Tavist-1). Clemastine is a very effective but in about 7-10% of the individuals who take it there is some mild sedation and it can dry the mouth and nose mildly. The sedation effect wears off quickly. I have patients take the first dose at night and by the second to third day of taking it, the sedation effect is gone. The dry mouth is easily handled with liberal fluid intake which you should be doing when racing anyway. With all the prescription antihistamines that are available, I find clemastine works best for me and most of my patients. You will want to avoid any antihistamine that has a decongestant in it. The decongestant will reduce blood flow to the muscles and decrease performance. Incidentally, decongestants are banded by the World Anti-Dopping Association, the International Olympic Committee, UCI and USA Cycling. February is the cedar polination season in Texas and Tapatito is at the epicenter of "Cedar Fever".

Thanks,

Thank you Doc! I would have never guessed that pseudafed, which is the only stuff I have in my cabinet would be bad. I will try the Claritin since I am sensitive to medication and next time pay more attention to the Cedar possibility.

I am sure there are some good stories Embarassed ,,, however, I cannot recall...
