Dear Bike Doc,
I did a very long road ride last Friday. The day started out cool and overcast so I wan't too worried that I had forgotten sunscreen. The result -- a fairly severe sunburn on my arms by the end of a very sunny, hot day. I slathered on aloe very gel for two days afterwards and thought all was well -- the burn wasn't very painful. Realized today (Wednesday) that my arms are covered with hundreds of tiny and not so tiny fluid-filled blisters. Again, not painful but a tiny bit itchy. Should I be applying something to the blisters (more aloe gel) or be using something to dry them out, or just let things resolve on their own?
By the way, I'm usually super responsible about sunscreen -- just forgot this one time.
Do you have a favorite sunscreen?

Redmountainbike:

So you and your mountain bike match now, eh? Wink

You have a second degree sunburn due to the blister formation. As you have discovered, ultraviolet light passes through water (the same stuff clouds are made off) and a person can sunburn just as baddly or even worse on a cloudy day due to the illusion that the clouds will prevent sunburning. Leave the blisters intact, they will open and drain on their own. I have found that Nivea cream (not the lotion but the cream) is quite helpful in reducing the pealing and discomfort from sun burn. You may want to try that appling it twice a day to the sun burned areas.

My favorite sun screen is Bull Frog™ . It stays on for several hours and is less likely to rub off. (BTW I have no vested intrest in Bull Frog™ or the manufacturer of it.)

Thanks,

I got the Nivea cream and it is helping nicely. The skin peeling off is fairly entertaining. The sunburn has turned from red to pink -- maybe I need to get a nice new pink bike to match! Hmm, pink surly, pink yeti?
