A friend of mine who plays alot of outdoor sports has mild diabetes. Just drinking water during sports is not hacking it. Any suggestions from diabetic racers or the doc on sport drinks and diabetes?

Drink the sports drinks. Exercise lowers blood sugars. The amount of sugar in the sports drink (most are about 6% or 6 grams of carbohydrates to 100 mls of liquid) are substantially lower in sugar than sodas and fruit juices. Drink enough sport drinks to meet the fluid replacement requirements 1-2 quarts per hour of working out in the heat on average. See my many previous posts on dehydration for more details on judging adequacy of fluid replacement. Bottom line, don't worry about the sugars in the sport drinks WHEN exercising. Different story, however, if the exercise consists only of lifting the remote control for the TV.... Wink
