Hi Doc, more & more lately I feel like an old woman when I get up in the mornings. My lower lumbar area is achey & it takes a few minutes before I can stand straight. I CT'ed my L-spine at work this past week (veterinary neurology practice) & there are some boney arthritic changes on the vertebral body of L4-L5 & Sacrum. The spinal canal appears clean, but the boney changes would explain some nerve root compression which would explain my occasionally being able to feel my sciatic nerve run down my right leg. My question is what can I do or what would you suggest to help relieve some of the pain & help slow down or prevent any more boney changes. We would normally put our patients on Tramadol &/or Gabapentin. I don't think it matters as this has been an intermittent problem for 4 or 5 years, but I was the one who had the abd. exp. & total hysterectomy before X-mas. My bones weren't lytic, but I know that I am now at a higher risk of osteoperosis & am taking calcium supplements. Thanks for any suggestions!

Denni:
Visit with your doctor. The degree of discomfort you are experiencing is concerning. There may be more going on than just osteoarthritis (wear and tear arthritis). Some testing may be in order. If every thing checks out okay and it is just osteoarthritis, then you may benefit from some focus physical therapy and supplimentation with glucosamine and chondroitin.
