I raced a 2day adventure race 3 weeks ago. Since then, my hip flexer has been giving me issues, off and on. After I bike or do anything such as that (i.e. running, swimming, etc.), it always hurts. Would the best thing for it be just some intense stretching and often? Is it possible that I have strained my hip flexer? I am not hip flexer savvy. Confused

Adv Sheila:

You may well have pulled or strained your hip flexors with the increased load you put on them with the two day adventure race. You may have further aggrivated the problem by not allowing sufficient healing time. Back off on the strenuous activities for a couple of weeks at least. Do your stretches but do no over do them as you can restrain the muscle. Get a copy of Bob Anderson's book "Stretching" to guide you in a safe and effective stretching program. If at any time your symptoms get worse or there is no improvement with rest andgentle stretching, do seek and evaluation by a sports medicine physician or orthopedic doctor who routinely cares for athletes.

Thanks,
