bikedoc...

I incurred a knee injury at Bar H. I went to the Dr. monday and the MRI came back today. The good news is it's only a knee sprain. The Dr. told me if my knee is not 50% better by monday to call him and he'll recommend some rehab. I might just take him up on the rehab part anyway just so I know how to handle knee issues in the future. My knee and lower leg is still swollen I am currently icing my knee three times a day and taking Aleve and I just started to wear a brace for extra support ( and it just feels better with it on). I can bend my knee at a 90 degree angle with little discomfort. The discomfort is a locking feeling, not a sharp pain. Of course the Dr. told me to layoff biking until my knee is back to normal.

What else can I do to speed up my reocvery. I never had a knee sprain but I'm not as young as I used to be and I notice it takes me twice as long to recover than when I was 20. I am now 41 yrs old. I'm thinking about swimming laps at the gym and I may even start doing some very easy short road rides this weekend and increase it each day as my knee seems fit.

Wait until Monday and see how your knee is doing. If you aren't better then the rehab route is appropriate. Swimming would be a good start. Once you get cleared by your doc to get back on the bike, easy road rides as you mentioned would be the next step up. Keep the gearing down, the cadence up and avoid big gear mashing, hard climbs and West Texas head winds for a few weeks. Have your bike set up looked at by a good bike shop. If your seat is too low, you will cause undo strain on the knee.

Thanks,
