Two hours into a long slow distance ride, my heartrate started to beat at around 165bpm for about five minutes. What makes this strange is that my target zone was 125-135bpm. My heartrate had been in my target zone for two hours -- same cadence, same terrain, same gear -- all the same except that I could feel my heart starting to race. Feeling it and seeing it on my monitor starting to climb beyond my lactate threshold for no reason, I got off the bike and sat still. It stayed beating like that for about five minutes.
Why?
Some info about me: Male, 43 years, 6'3'', 185lbs., waking heartrate low 40's, lactate threshold 160bpm, average 10+ hours on bike per week. Healthy?
I went on to finish a four hour ride with no problem.
Just curious what could have happened.
Thanks! |

strohls freely:
There are lots of factors that could make your heart rate higher with the same preceived exersion such as dehydration, over training, inadequate rest, higher temperature, humidity, subtle change in wind causing a head wind or cross head wind, subtle underlying mental stress. The fact it came down with a five minute rest and was not critically elevated and the fact you finished a four hour ride without incident makes it unlikely serious.
