There seems to be a fair amount of conflicting information about whether cholesterol is as bad as some would lead you to believe. Numbers above 200 are said to contribute to heart disease and the bad stuff (LDL) always seems to be significantly higher than the good stuff (HDL) yet the body makes far more cholesterol than we would ever consume. It binds to toxins such as bacteria and viruses to neutralize them which helps the immune system. It attaches to nicks and tears in arterial walls to repair them like a band-aid yet that seems to be the rub. By doing that, it clogs the arteries and restricts blood flow.
An article in the January edition of the American Heart Journal (I think that it the name of the magazine) indicates that about 60% of people who were studied in a particular hospital had acceptable levels of cholesterol when they had coronary failure.
My question is, do you have any recent information or can you point me to additional resources and studies on the subject?
Thanks in advance for your help and forgive me for getting off of a specific bike topic. |
