Tom:
Beta blocker medications (such as atenolol, labetolol, metoprolol, naldolol, propranolol to name just a few by their generic names) can trigger asthma attacks in susceptible individuals. There are other classes of antihypertensive medications that can be used in asthmatics such as the calcium channel blocker, peripheral alpha agonists, central alpha agonists and angiotensin receptor blockers. Talk with your doctor about your symptoms and desire to avoid blood pressure medications that would be adverse to exercised induce asthma and to exercising in the heat (diuretics are at issue here). There are several good options that are available for someone with an asthma tendency.
