Trek Texas presents the TMBRA XC MTB State Championship Series:

We are super excited to announce Trek as the title sponsor of the Spring Series. To be clear – our spring series is the nationally recognized TX XC MTB State Championship. Don’t be fooled by imitators!

Trek will be present at all spring races with their hospitality tent, offering neutral mechanic support and SWAG. Make sure to stop by and thank them. Without their support our series would be very bare bones.

This year our B.O.D voted to not continue with double points races. This means the only extra points available is through our Mellow Johnny’s Pay Dirt program. Remember, 10 hours of Pay Dirt gets you 60 points towards your spring points total. Completing your Pay Dirt also puts you in the Pay Dirt Raffle. Our raffle is looking really good this year with the grand prize being a Trek X-Caliber XC race bike. Plus items from Wahoo, Shimano, Sram, Santa Cruz , free TMBRA race entries and more.

Another change moving forward is the SS open division will now complete the same distance as the Open Pro division. SS 2/3 will continue to complete the Cat 2 distance.

TMBRA is also excited to announce Don Losole “The Voice of TMBRA” will be present at all Spring Series events. He will be our official announcer and will handle the podium presentations.

Registration is open for round one of the spring series at Pat Mayes Lake in Paris TX. Register here: https://www.bikereg.com/barberhillshardlabor2023

All other spring races are on the calendar and will open registration at least a month before race day. Keep an eye on our race and info calendar for the most up to date information and registration links: https://www.tmbra.org/wp/events/

Discounting the most recent years where all racing was lost to Covid, I had pretty well abandoned TMBRA racing in favor of the glitzier “grassroots” mega races like the Epic Series. Those races also afforded me the opportunity to watch my son race and visit exotic trails. However, the “grassroots” races are now anything but “common man” races with entry fees over $200 and accommodations many hundreds of dollars, not to mention the travel expenses. The mega races are now only for the wealthy. I’m ready to come home. However, in the intervening years, I have grown……”old”. And with that….slow. My race age, alas, is now 70+. It looks like there may actually be a TMBRA category for 70+, but I saw only one entry in the 2022 Spring Series. I would be encouraged to participate if there are a handful of racers in my age group and I would be willing to do whatever communication legwork required to recruit such racers.
Some of the messaging that needs to be conveyed is that our age group does not put a premium on placing and we are sensitive to “being in the way” of younger/faster racers, but we still welcome the full challenge (Cat. 1 courses). Does the Board or anyone else have any feedback?

Hi Mike, welcome back. Our goal is to provide racing for all skill levels and age groups at a reasonable rate. We are open to any ideas. Feel free to reach out to me.

Dave, thanks for the reply. Can/should I contact you through forum posts or can I do it via email? Fundamentally I guess I’m asking if you have a feel for potential numbers of racers over 70 and what the critical mass might need to be. Is there anything I/we can do to encourage more to race? Judging from my occasional sighting of septuagenarians on my rides in Hays County I know we’re out there and pretty fit. Is there anything we can do to encourage race participation? For me personally I want to know there are guys like me on the course and that I am not going to be an impediment to the younger racers’ experience. I care little where I place. It could be a “simple” matter of contacting previous years’ racers in their late 60’s from TMBRA’s entry lists and asking them if they’d like to compete in a 70+ category. Maybe finding a creative start time would help mitigate the inevitable overtaking racer’s complication. I also think there’s some healthy messaging done when younger racers see that folks in their 70’s/80’s are still passionate about racing on dirt and that their own careers can be very long. For me it was always watching Fred Schmid.
